S.F.’s iconic El Farolito finally opens in North Beach

Good news, Bay Area burrito fans: A new location of Mission District taqueria institution El Farolito is now open in North Beach.

The taqueria is officially slinging burritos and tacos at 1230 Grant Ave., at Columbus Avenue, according to an El Farolito Facebook post and Hoodline.

This outpost of El Farolito nearly didn’t exist, however, after it was temporarily blocked due to San Francisco’s ban on chain stores in North Beach. The controversy sparked debate over whether the iconic San Francisco-born string of taquerias should be considered a chain, which is defined by city planning code as a businesss with 11 or more locations. That then led to fervor over the city’s rules.

El Farolito already had at least 11 restaurants in San Francisco, the East Bay, the North Bay and the Central Valley, but some outposts outside of San Francisco are called El Favorito and use slightly different signage. The…
